The narrator, Aurora del Valle, was born in San Francisco at the end of the 19th Century. Parentless, her grandparents raise her in a privileged home, in a society full of familiar characters from La Casa del los Espiritus & Hija de la Fortuna. Aurora grows into a defiant, strong-willed young woman forced to face the mystery & trauma of her past, & at age 30, returns to Chile to explore her roots & become a champion of womens rights.
